The UMass Lowell River Hawks got their 2015 baseball season underway the past weekend against the Georgia State Panthers in Atlanta, Georgia, splitting the four-game series.
One River Hawk in particular had a great opening series and for that effort, Danny Mendick was name America East Player of the Week.
The senior infielder tied for the league-lead with a .462 batting average (6-for-13), tied for the conference lead with six RBI, while also legging out three doubles.
Mendick had a pair of multi-hit games, going 2-for-5 in the series opener and then 3-for-4 to close the series with two RBI. He drove in three runs in game two of the series and finished with a .526 on-base percentage and a .692 slugging percentage.
Last year, Mendick hit .314/.478/.405 with nine doubles, five home runs, 34 RBI and a perfect 11-for-11 stolen bases. He was named to the America East Conference Second Team and to the NEIBA All-New England Third Team. He had 15 multi-hit and 10 multi-RBI games.
Prior to joining UMass Lowell, Mendick played two seasons at Monroe Community College.
The River Hawks are back in action on Friday, February 27 in the first game of a four-game series against the Dallas Baptist University Patriots in Dallas, Texas.
