Great pitching for the UMass Lowell River Hawks baseball team earned two pitchers weekly America East awards.
Freshman Andrew Ryan and senior Geoff DeGroot picked up Rookie of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors respectively, announced America East on Monday. Both pitchers had a big impact on the River Hawks three-game sweep of the Hartford Hawks over the week after they each went the distance in their respective games.
“Andrew and Geoff had great performances and were big keys to our sweep this weekend,” said UMass Lowell Head Coach Ken Harring. “Pitching always sets the tone and they did a great job.”
Ryan tossed 9.0 innings of five-hit baseball in the first game of the River Hawks doubleheader on Saturday against Hartford. He added two walks and two strikeouts to pick up the complete-game shutout, 3-0, and improved to 1-1 on the season.
DeGroot went all 9.0 innings in the series finale on Sunday, allowing an earned run on four hits, one walk, a wild pitch and four strikeouts. UMass Lowell defeated the Hawks, 3-1, and DeGroot improved to 3-2 on the season.
Aside from the conference recognition, Ryan was named the River Hawk of the Week, which is chosen each week in voting by the UMass Lowell Athletic Communications staff. It honors the top athlete, male or female, based on performance during the previous week of competition.
With the three-game sweep of Hartford over the weekend, the UMass Lowell baseball team improved to 12-21 overall this season and 8-6 in America East play. This is just the River Hawks second season of NCAA Division I baseball.
UMass Lowell is back in action on Wednesday, April 29 as they host Rhode Island at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Massachusetts. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. eastern.
