Winkler, who was originally committed to join the Northeastern Huskies, has decided he is a better fit with the Norm Bazin led River Hawks.
The York, Maine native is a forward with the Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League (USHL). Winkler has tallied 13 points (6g, 7a) over the first 15 games of the season. Last season with the Phantoms, the forward tallied 17 points (2g, 15a) over 52 points. He is on track for a much improved season.
In November 2013, Future Considerations stated “Winkler is a prototypical power forward who goes to the dirty areas of the ice and has a rocket of a shot. Makes a good pass but could use his size better. For Winkler all the raw potential is there but he just has to put it all together.”
Prior to his time in the USHL, Winkler spent a season with the Portland Jr. Pirates and before that he attended and played hockey at Berwick High School.
Winkler is the sixth UMass Lowell recruit in the USHL this season and the second to commit to the River Hawks in November. Winkler will join UMass Lowell in 2016-17.
