The UMass Lowell River Hawks are set to take on the Northeastern Huskies in a Hockey East Championship game at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday, March 19 at 7:00 p.m. eastern. Game will air live on the New England Sports Network (NESN), NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) and NBC Sports Live Extra.
UMass Lowell currently sits at No. 8 in the USCHO.com and the USA Today polls. The River Hawks have been nationally ranked for 89 consecutive weeks. The River Hawks have been in the top-10 for 56 of those weeks.
Last night, UMass Lowell edged out the Providence College Friars in a triple-overtime thriller, 2-1. The River Hawks advance to their fourth straight HEA Championship.
This is the 112th meeting between the two schools and UMass Lowell appears to have history or its side. The River Hawks lead the all-time series 59-42-10. Northeastern won the first ever contest, 5-2, on Dec. 17, 1983. UMass Lowell’s first win came a nearly year later on an overtime goal from Mike Opre. The two have evenly split the last six meetings, 2-2-2.
UMass Lowell is 2-1-0 in the Championship Game under Bazin’s watch and 2-3 overall. Only two other teams have made four straight HEA Championship games, Boston College has done it twice and Maine has done it once. Northeastern makes their first title game since 1988, which was their only other appearance, and is only the third 6th seeded team to make the finals.
