The Charlotte Checkers, American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes, signed forward Derek Arnold to a professional try-out agreement (PTO) on Saturday, March 26.
Arnold has spent most of the 2015-16 season with the Manchester Monarchs at the ECHL level with a couple stints with the Ontario Reign and Portland Pirates of the AHL. While with Manchester, the forward has tallied 30 points (16g, 14a) with 45 penalty minutes over 42 games. At the AHL level, Arnold tallied no points over nine games.
In his debut with the Checkers, Arnold tallied two points on a goal and an assist, including the game-winning-goal.
Last season, the Norwood, Massachusetts native spent the year with Lillehammer HK in Norway. Arnold tallied 45 points (21g, 24a) in 45 games.
Prior to turning pro, Arnold spent four seasons at UMass Lowell from 2010-2014, winning back-to-back Hockey East Championships in the process. He tallied 98 points (43g, 55a) in 154 games with the River Hawks. His best season came in 2011-12, when the forward scored collegiate career highs in goals (17), assists (17) and points (34) in 38 games.
The Checkers play their home games at the Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina. The arena seats 8,600 for hockey contests.
