The United States Hockey League will expand for the 2014-15 season and the USHL’s newest team the Madison Capitols will have two UMass Lowell River Hawks’ recruits on their roster. The Capitols have used two USHL tenders to sign Guillaume Leclerc and Ryan Lohin for the 2014-15 season.
Leclerc (’96) is currently in the hunt for a North American Hockey League championship with the Austin Bruins. The forward tallied 21 goals and 25 assists for 46 points in 54 regular season games for the Bruins. He has added two more points on a goal and an assist in four playoff games so far. The Bruins advanced to the NAHL Division Finals last week after defeating fellow UMass Lowell recruit Michael Louria and the Minot Minotauros in triple-overtime.
The Besancon, France native notched four points (2g, 2a) in five World Junior Championship games with Team France this season as well. Leclerc made his commitment to the River Hawks in July 2013 and will likely join the team for the 2015-16 season.
Lohin (’96) spent the 2013-14 season with Team Comcast of the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League. The forward notched 30 goals and added 38 assists for 68 points in 36 games with Team Comcast in 2013-14. The Chadds Ford, Penn. native committed to join UMass Lowell in February 2014 and will either join the River Hawks in 2015-16 or 2016-17.
Both Leclerc and Lohin were likely going to be taken early in the USHL Phase II Entry draft in a few weeks, but this will assure the Capitols a few star caliber skaters for their upcoming season.
The Madison Capitols are based in Madison, Wisc. and have an ownership group which features Minnesota Wild defenseman Ryan Suter. The Capitols will play their inaugural season in 2014-15.
