The Boston Celtics have the No. 6 and No. 13 overall picks in the 2014 NBA Draft which takes place on Thursday, June 26. Having picks outside the top-5 forced the Celtics look away from guys like Duke’s Jabari Parker and Kansas’ Joel Embiid. However, after suffering a broken foot, Embiid has dropped in multiple mock drafts and may have just found his way onto the top of the Celtics’ draft board.
The Celtics had their eyes on Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart or Indiana forward Noah Vonleh with the No. 6 overall pick in this year’s draft, but rumor has it the C’s have shifted their focus to Embiid, even with his current need of foot surgery.
Although this will hurt Embiid in multiple ways, a broken foot doesn’t feel all that good, plus the loss of some major draft-day dollars won’t sit too well with the forward. Embiid has been selected in multiple mock drafts as high as No. 1 overall, but with his foot injury the Celtics may get the steal of the 2014 draft at No. 6.
If this foot injury is a fluke injury and the talented forward can play an 82-game NBA season, the Celtics will win this year’s draft. If Embiid becomes the NBA’s next Greg Oden, who after being selected first-overall in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers has only played 105 games since draft day due to a number of injuries, the Celtics don’t lose much because there is no telling what a No. 6 pick will ever become anyway.
All this won’t matter if the Celtics get what they covet, Kevin Love. The C’s have been in talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves about the all-star big man and would love to send the No. 6 and 13 picks to Minnesota, along with others, for Love. The Celtics are not the only team talking to the Wolves about Love, but according to some reports have the best offer on the table.
Celtics fans will know a lot about the future of their team come draft day. Rumors circulated this morning the C’s would shop Rajon Rondo should they fall short of trading for Love. Stay tuned on draft night to see who the Celtics pick or if the Celtics are able to land Love instead.
Either way, the Celtics could end up with a top-tier big man in Embiid or Love.
