The Toledo Walleye of the ECHL have signed former UMass Lowell River Hawk forward Josh Holmstrom, according to Gary Weckwerth, owner of the USHL‘s Sioux Falls Stampede.

The Walleye are the ECHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL), and the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL).

The 24-year-old spent the last few games of the 2013-14 season with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL after signing an amateur try-out agreement with the club. In seven games at the AHL level, he tallied a single assist with two penalty minutes and a minus-one rating.

The Colorado Springs, Colorado native spent four years at UMass Lowell from 2010-2014. In 154 games, Holmstrom tallied 74 points (31g, 43a) with 87 penalty minutes and a plus-11 rating. While serving as team captain during his senior year, the forward tallied 18 points (7g, 11a).

Prior to joining UMass Lowell, Josh tallied 68 points (29g, 39a) in 117 games over two seasons with the Stampede.

Holmstrom is the younger brother of Ben Holmstrom, also a former River Hawk forward. Ben recently signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Carolina Hurricanes organization after spending five years with the Philadelphia Flyers organization.

Josh is one of the few remaining former River Hawks who played professional hockey in 2013-14 to sign with a professional team this offseason.
